Every figure on this site, from a calculator answer to a scenario page to your own plan, comes from the same projection engine or the shared assumptions it reads. It works year by year: federal and state income tax, capital gains, the taxable part of Social Security, retirement accounts and required distributions, and healthcare before and after 65, including marketplace premium tax credits and Medicare surcharges. The assumptions it uses, and the things it does not model, are on the methodology page.

Government figures come from the documents that publish them, and the figures in our reference database are listed with their sources on the reference page. How we source, update, check and correct them is set out in our editorial policy, which also lists every correction we have made.
